Our client is an established charity that provides a range of specialist abuse support services to women, men, and children, are looking to recruit an Independent Sexual Violence Advisor to offer frontline support to victims of violence and abuse

Synopsis of duties

  • Independent Sexual Violence Advisers (ISVAs) play an important role in providing specialist tailored support to victims and survivors of sexual violence, irrespective of whether they have reported to the police.
  • The Disability ISVA role is to provide ongoing continuity, advocacy and impartial advice and information about all their options, such as reporting to the police, accessing Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) services, and specialist support such as pre-trial therapy and sexual violence counselling.
  • Undertake comprehensive risk assessments and completion of tailored support plans, ensuring all support offered is trauma focused and client needs-led
  • To provide non-therapeutic emotional and practical support to victims/survivors.  This will be delivered face to face, telephone, text and/or email based on the preferences of the client.
  • To build links with disability services across West Yorkshire to ensure wrap around support is available.
  • Provide information and advocacy to enable clients to navigate and understand the criminal justice process and ensure their rights are upheld in accordance with the Victims Code of Practice.  Explain criminal, legal and if relevant, civil remedies to clients. To ensure the victim has access to resources and support to access the criminal justice process. Working in partnership with our criminal justice partners to raise awareness of some of the challenges people with disabilities may face when trying to access justice. 
  • Attend regular case review meetings in order to communicate information regarding cases, in particular information sharing across a multi-agency platform where relevant

Essential Requirements

  • Independent Sexual Violence Advisor qualification and/or direct experience of working in sexual violence support
  • Experience of working with adults, acknowledging safeguarding concerns and responding appropriately
  • A thorough understanding of the nature of sexual violence, sexual abuse, sexual exploitation and sexual coercion including adults and children with disabilities.
  • Clear understanding of sexual abuse/rape and how this affects people with disabilities and barriers they may face. 
  • Experience of working/liaising within a multi-agency setting
  • Understanding of the criminal justice System and the Victims Code of Practice.
  • Experience of using risk assessments and appropriate interventions tools to manage and identify risk
