Education Inclusion Mentor

Role:                Education Inclusion Mentor
Location:         Educational Settings within West Yorkshire
Hours:             Term Time Only, 35 hours per week

Salary:             £23,500 - £27,000 Pro-Rota
Start Date:       2nd September 2024
Duration:         6 Month FTC

 

Our client, a respected charity that supports individuals facing significant disadvantage, are looking for a dedicated Education Inclusion Mentor. As an Education Inclusion Mentors, you will be embedded within schools located West Yorkshire. The roles are part of an ambitious program supported by the Department for Education, aimed at assisting children and young people at risk of serious youth violence, gang involvement, and exploitation.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 mentoring to young people identified as needing targeted support.
  • Develop positive relationships with children, young people, and professionals within the school setting.
  • Create a safe space for mentees to explore challenging and potentially traumatic issues.
  • Encourage lifestyle changes and promote positive self-identity and aspirations.
  • Maintain accurate records of mentoring sessions and other relevant data.
  • Collaborate with school staff and safeguarding leads to prioritise student safety and well-being.
  • Participate in multi-agency meetings, contributing expertise on lived experiences and local knowledge.
  • Support the overall aims of the program, including reducing risky behaviour, exclusions, and improving engagement in learning.

 

Requirements:

  • A deep understanding of the complex issues and challenges facing vulnerable young people
  • Relevant direct or indirect experience of the criminal justice system, or experience of the issues facing this client group (substance misuse, drug supply, gangs or knife crime, social exclusion and isolation, child criminal exploitation, adverse childhood experiences and trauma)
  • Experience in supporting young people involved in or at risk of entry into the Criminal Justice System.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
  • Understanding and demonstration of professional standards, accountability and commitment to excellent safeguarding practice and professional boundaries
  • An empathetic and understanding attitude towards young peoples’ needs
  • Ability to use monitoring systems to record all aspects of the work, including action plans, outcomes and session data on a day-to-day basis
  • Experience of working in an embedded setting in schools, PRU’s or alternative education would be advantageous
  • A proactively emotionally resilient Mentor that can engage positively and successfully with challenging individuals, including those with complex needs, reluctance to discuss their needs and emotional turmoil
  • Enhanced DBS registered on the DBS Update Service would be highly desirable
