Hours:              37 hours per week

Rate:                £27,720.54

Our client, a well-respected charity, is looking for a Community Development Worker to proactively engage with communities affected by harmful cultural practices including ‘honour’ based violence, forced marriage and FGM/C, and provide community based support for adults who have had harmful cultural practices performed on them or who may/whose children may be at risk

Synopsis of duties:

  • To respond dynamically to the needs of those affected by harmful cultural practices, to identify their support needs and empower them regarding harmful cultural practices and their consequences.
  • Providing one-to-one services to adults affected by harmful cultural practices living in the community, including safety planning and risk assessments.
  • To undertake dynamic evaluations which explore; family history, family functioning, interpersonal relationships, behaviour management, barriers to independence and self-management.
  • To explain housing, civil and criminal legal, including immigration options to victims and provide advice on the preparation of applications for public funding and protective orders.
  • To work with partners, including external solicitors to make applications for protective orders in relation to honour based violence.
  • To support victims through the criminal and civil justice systems, explaining the procedures and their role and rights within those systems.
  • Providing group work to women and children from diaspora communities affected by harmful cultural practices to challenge any support for their continuation and increase knowledge of human rights and UK law.
  • Ensure that vulnerable adults’ welfare (and any children associated with the client) is/are safeguarded in accordance with Stop Domestic Abuse’s Protection from Abuse Policy and the Hampshire and Portsmouth Local Safeguarding Children’s/Adults Boards policies and procedures, including making appropriate onwards referrals when required

Requirements:

  • Safeguarding Adults Level 2 and/ or Safeguarding Children Level 2 or demonstrable equivalent experience and the ability and commitment to achieve qualification within 6 months of appointment within one month of employment.
  • Experience of supporting people from BAMER backgrounds in the voluntary or public sectors in paid employment or in a voluntary capacity.
  • Experience of working with vulnerable groups.
  • Understand the principles of risk assessment, safety planning
  • and risk management for those affected by domestic abuse (victims, perpetrators, children)
  • Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service would be advantageous.
